A flurry of playful dresses adorned with whimsical puff sleeves, delicate embroidery and exuberant colors – these are just some of the motifs on offer at Fanm Mon. Meaning “nature woman” in her native language of Creole, Sophia Demirtas is the brains behind this dreamy womenswear label. Herself born in Haiti and now based in Turkey, Demirtas finds inspiration in the vibrant embroidery patterns she witnessed from her grandmother and aunts in her native Haiti. The result is a collection of beautifully feminine pieces bursting with poise and personality.

Brooklyn-based Laurent is a woman on a mission. Having created her eponymous fashion label in 2017 out of a small room in her Brooklyn flat, today she is fresh from being the newest darling at New York Fashion Week. Earlier this year, Laurent was further selected by Afropunk as one of nine designers in its Black Fashion Accelerator Class of 2022. Her designs are one part slinky and sexy, the other comfortable and easy-to-wear. Think sultry satin dresses and luxurious matching sets. In her own words: “I made this for woman, I made this for you.” We couldn’t have said it any better ourselves.

Another Brooklyn darling we can’t get enough of is Fe Noel. Counting Michelle Obama and Beyoncé as some of her clientele, Felisha Noel’s self-styled label provides wearable high fashion with an affordable price tag. She has a knack for creating undeniably feminine pieces that sculpt and mold around the female physique. You’ll find yourself wanting to snuggle up in the soft, drapey fabric of cheeky robes and maxi-style dresses.

Here’s one to bring out that inner diva within each of us. Atlanta-based Oyemwen Oriakhi is your go-to designer for larger-than-life, celebratory fashion. We love her voluminous tulle creations, ideal for your next ladies-only birthday bash or princess-themed bridal shower. Even better, she has a dedicated mommy-and-me section for fashionable mamas to mix and match high fashion with their mini-me’s too.
Here’s one for all the boho babes and gypsy darlings out there. Island Tribe is more than a fashion label, it’s a movement. Created by one-woman powerhouse Angelique Hayling, the lifestyle brand brings together bespoke designers from as far afield as Mali, Bali and India to name just a few. Working towards fair trade and sustainability, at Island Tribe you’ll find everything from free-flowing kaftans to artisanal jewellery.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this brand comes via the alleyways of Paris. Aliétte is born in bred in the US, thanks to proud New Yorker Jason Rembert. We can’t get enough of his female-centric structured gowns and crisp, elegant lines. Having made his debut only a few seasons ago, he has already dressed some of Hollywood’s brightest young stars – Lizzo, Cardi B and, most notably, Issa Rae in that barely-there silver fishnet dress at the 2021 Emmy Awards. Definitely one to watch!
